Sensory Needs:

  • Sensory Bags are available during Story Time. These bags include headphones, sunglasses, a stress ball, a fidget toy, and a card explaining square breathing. If you are in need of a Sensory Bag outside of Story Time, please ask a Library staff member.

  • We have a Sensory Hideaway near the Children's Area. If you are in need of a different quiet area, ask a Library staff member if the meeting room is available.

Other Accessible Services, Tools, & Features:

  • Home Delivery: We offer delivery service for people who live in the Mechanicsburg School District who are unable to visit the library because of temporary or permanent physical limitations. Please fill out the application if you are interested in participating in this service.

  • Aunt Flow Dispenser: Our women's restroom is equipped with a period product dispenser that is ADA-compliant and free-vend, so no one has to use a quarter to get a product out of the machine.

  • Large Print Books, Audiobooks, Wonderbooks/Vox Books: Large-print books, audiobooks, and wonderbooks/vox books can be reserved through our online library catalog or by calling the library at 937-834-2004. Audiobooks can also be downloaded from the Digital Downloads section of our website.

  • Web Browsing Tools: Tools are available to improve the web-browsing experience for people with a visual impairment or vision loss. Objects can be made bigger and easier to see by adjusting the text size and screen magnification in a browser's Settings menu. These options are typically listed under Preferences or View. Most modern browsers also offer a screen reader that renders text and image content as speech. The library has headphones available for use.

  • Memory Care Kits: Our memory care kits are designed for people with Alzheimer's, dementia, memory loss or cognitive impairment. Each themed kit includes a DVD and photo/activity cards. These items are designed to help individuals experiencing memory loss trigger memories and facilitate communication with a caregiver or loved one.

  • Services for the Blind and Print Disabled: Talking Book Program: Library staff are able to certify eligibility for the program. Please contact us if you have questions or would like to apply.

    A Note about Service Animals:

The Mechanicsburg Public Library welcomes patrons who use service animals as determined by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). A service animal (dog or miniature horse only) is an animal that has been individually trained to work or perform tasks for the benefit of a person with a disability. The work or task must be directly related to that person's disability.

Animals that are considered pets, or comfort, therapy, or support animals, are not service animals as defined by the ADA and are not permitted on Library property at this time. (Exceptions will be made for animals in the building as part of Library educational and recreational programming, pending approval by the Director or his/her designee.)
